Haringey Vacant Shops

About

We were commissioned by LB Haringey to investigate the use of vacant shops in 3 town centres (Wood Green/Green Lanes, Tottenham and Crouch End).   The work involved liaising with Council officers in various departments and local stakeholders as well as with property owners and their agents.  We devised a list of arts and cultural organisations who would be interested in taking control of vacant space. The aim was to occupy 3 shops in the private sector.  One aspect of it was to aim to save owners vacant rates.

Results It rapidly became clear that the private sector owners of identified shops were not going to participate in this project and it was switched to be aimed at local authority owned vacant retail units. Over 10 retail units were identified as possible and one was re-used for arts use by different artists over a period of time. We produced a “how to” manual for the relevant project manager and mentored her as well. Due to internal council changes the focus of the project changed.
